Technology Campus Alarm Management

The Customer
The facilities management team of a major multinational technology company.
The Problem
A campus of more than 20 buildings was rapidly constructed to meet changing business requirements. The abbreviated construction schedule left many buildings with significant operational deficiencies at turnover. Facilities personnel felt overwhelmed. The campus flagship building, for example, generated thousands of alarms every day. They contacted us and asked for help.
The Solution
When the problem is alarms, the solution is usually ISA18.2. This site illustrates why. The facilities management personnel were experienced and engaged; they developed a set of criteria for what counted as critical and what did not. Once we had separated the alerts from the alarms, the number of alarmable points dropped substantially. After that reduction, we worked through the remaining alarms to eliminate chattering.
With the alarms accurately reflecting building conditions, we collaborated with the facilities team to connect the building automation system with PagerDuty, an incident management platform widely used in the technology sector. The integration reduced response times for new alerts and streamlined both the coordination of active incidents and the review of historical alarm responses.
The Results
The facilities team now receives fewer than one critical alarm per day across the entire campus. The average alarm incident resolves in about half an hour. Campus facilities operations have shifted from responding to a continuous stream of emergencies to focusing on improvement projects and energy measures.

Effective alarm management means your system accurately represents facility conditions, so you can respond to the most critical problems first. If that is not happening, let us know, we will work with you to set goals and reach them.
